Potassium Aluminum Sulfate (Alum) is used to pretreat fabric or paper before marbling to ensure that designs transfer clearly, as a mordant in some natural dyes, and in science projects. To use, dissolve one cup of Alum in water along with four teaspoons of Calgon. Apply it to your surface using a spray or sponge and allow it to dry completely before engaging your surface in marbling.
