Florals? Groundbreaking!

April Showers Bring May... Experiments in Color:

We know what you’re thinking—painting flowers? Groundbreaking!

But hear us out. Florals aren't just a classic subject—they're one of the most versatile ways to level up your painting skills, no matter your medium. Whether you're working in watercolor, acrylic, oils, or even gouache, flowers are the perfect excuse to dive into bold color combos, explore delicate texture, and fine-tune your shading and composition skills.

Let’s be real: painting flowers can look simple, but making them feel alive on paper or canvas is a whole different story. Each petal is an opportunity to experiment with transparency, layering, and brush technique. Each bloom? A mini-masterclass in color theory. (Split complementary palette, anyone?)

And hey—if you needed a reason to buy yourself a bouquet? Go full Miley Cyrus (or channel your inner RuPaul) and absolutely buy yourself flowers. Think of it as art supplies with a scent!

So Why Flowers, and Why Now?

Because it's May! And after a rainy April, what better way to kick off a fresh month than with fresh inspiration? If you’ve been in a creative rut or itching to try something new, floral studies are a low-pressure, high-reward way to push your practice.

Try:
  • Using only three colors for an entire painting (hello, limited palette challenge!)
  • Going abstract with your blooms (hello, expressive brushwork!)
  • Painting the same flower in three different mediums (compare & contrast!)
  • Repainting the same flower under different lighting (hello, dramatic shadows!)

New: Holbein Granulating Watercolor Sets

Speaking of trying something new—have you seen the brand new Holbein Granulating Watercolor Sets? These dreamy new sets come in four themed 6-color collections: LandscapeFlowerMoon, and Bird. For Florals Month, the Flower Set is especially perfect, packed with juicy, granulating colors that do some of the texture work for you. (Watercolor nerds, you know the joy.)

Granulating paints bring a whole new dimension to petals and leaves—think soft textures, subtle color separations, and that magic that happens when pigment settles into the tooth of your paper!
Plus, they’re a great excuse to shake up your palette. Been using the same blues and pinks since 2011? Time to treat yourself.

Let’s Grow Together

So whether you're a seasoned floral painter or just dipping your toes into the garden, we invite you to bloom with us this May. Try something new. Push your practice. Take a class! And remember: sometimes the simplest subjects offer the richest rewards.

Tag us in your floral creations this month—we’d love to see how you’re blossoming!
Happy painting!
