Frieda Weeks is The Art Store's Superhero

"JUST SHOW UP." - Frieda Weeks, on how to best support a cancer warrior.

In a world often plagued by darkness, real-life superheroes emerge, donning no capes but possessing immeasurable strength and compassion. Liverpool resident Frieda Weeks stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, earning her title as the official superhero of The Art Store, and her organization, Hope for Heather, shines as a guiding light in the fight against ovarian cancer.

Frieda's journey into the realm of superheroes began with a profound loss—the passing of her beloved daughter, Heather, at the young age of 24 due to ovarian cancer. Heather's passion for her work at the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance ignited a flame within Frieda and her family. Determined to honor Heather's legacy and continue her mission, they embarked on a remarkable journey that would change countless lives.

Fifteen years ago, Hope for Heather was born—a testament to love, resilience, and unwavering dedication. Since its inception, the organization has achieved remarkable milestones, raising an astounding $800,000+ for ovarian cancer research. Each year, they advocate tirelessly in Washington DC for federally funded research, championing the cause with unwavering determination.

But Hope for Heather is more than just a fundraising powerhouse; it's a lifeline for cancer warriors and their families right here at home. Through initiatives like the Men of Teal program, the Teal Circle of Women, and a youth ambassador program, they've distributed over half a million symptom cards, empowering individuals with knowledge and support. Their innovative port shirt design, allowing access to chemotherapy chest ports without disrobing, exemplifies their commitment to easing the burdens faced by cancer warriors.

Moreover, Hope for Heather extends a helping hand through their fund at the Upstate Cancer Center, providing crucial assistance with out-of-pocket expenses. Their impact reverberates through the Syracuse/CNY community, offering solace, support, and a glimmer of hope to those facing the toughest battles of their lives.

However, the road to change is not without its challenges. Balancing the emotional toll of working with cancer fighters and their families while maintaining the drive to fundraise and increase awareness is no easy feat. Frieda and her team acknowledge the weight of their mission, recognizing that every loss reverberates throughout the organization. Yet, they persevere, fueled by the belief that their work is making a tangible difference in the lives of others.

Self-care emerges as a cornerstone of their approach, as they prioritize moments of respite amidst their tireless efforts. Setting boundaries, taking time to appreciate life's simple joys, while remaining steadfastly available to those in need, epitomizes their commitment to holistic well-being.

Volunteers stand as the lifeblood of Hope for Heather, embodying the spirit of community and compassion that defines the organization. With events on the horizon and a constant need for support, Frieda extends an invitation to all who wish to join their noble cause. Whether it's lending a helping hand at the NYS Fair or contributing in myriad other ways, volunteers play an indispensable role in the fight against ovarian cancer.

As National Superheroes Day dawns, let us salute Frieda Weeks—the embodiment of strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication. Through Hope for Heather, she illuminates the path forward, proving that even in the darkest of times, hope remains steadfast. Together, we stand united in the fight against ovarian cancer, inspired by the remarkable legacy of a true superhero. As Frieda says, "Just Show Up."

Please come to The Art Store on April 30th as we celebrate "TEAL TUESDAY" for Ovarian Cancer Awareness. Pick up a symptom card (take one for a friend or family member) and help us bring awareness to this cause.
