October Artist of the Month, Thomas VanBeveren

Thomas VanBeveren, a 21-year-old artist, has embarked on a creative journey that is as unique as it is inspiring. With a deep passion for art and an unwavering commitment to leaving a lasting legacy through his work, Thomas's artistic evolution has been a fascinating exploration of the human experience.

Thomas's journey into the world of art began in an unexpected way. In 2019, he received a set of art supplies as a Christmas gift from his mom, a gesture initially meant for some casual enjoyment. These supplies lay untouched in his room for nearly a year until the global pandemic of 2020 brought the world to a standstill. It was during this time of isolation and self-reflection that Thomas found himself yearning for a means of expression and a voice in a turbulent world.

"I've always loved to create things and I have managed to hold on to a childlike imagination," Thomas shares. "Once coronavirus was in full effect and the world stopped moving, I found myself desperate for expression and desperate for a voice."

Motivated by a desire to leave a lasting mark on the world, Thomas's art delves deep into the human experience, often touching on themes of isolation, anxiety, and fear. These emotions, which he grapples with on a daily basis, find their way into his paintings, creating a raw and authentic connection between the artist and his audience.

Thomas's creative process is as spontaneous and diverse as his art itself. He describes it as a mysterious and organic experience, with each project taking on a unique approach. Whether he's painting, sewing, sculpting, or writing, Thomas's work is a reflection of his boundless creativity and willingness to experiment with different mediums.

When it comes to influences, Thomas draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists, both historical and contemporary. Icons like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, David Choe, and George Condo have left a significant mark on his artistic journey, contributing to the rich tapestry of his creative style.

Regarding his working environment, Thomas is adaptable, and his preferences change depending on his mood. He finds inspiration in silence, stimulating podcasts, and an eclectic mix of music, which ranges from Frank Sinatra to Wu-Tang Clan. His most inspired moments often occur during the nighttime hours, with fall and spring being his favorite seasons to create.

Thomas's studio, primarily located in his basement, serves as a hub for his artistic endeavors. He works with acrylics on stretched canvas, often using a variety of tools, including brushes, fingers, and even dental floss for sewing. His workspace is a testament to his dedication to exploring different mediums, from clay and collage to sketching and writing.

One aspect that sets Thomas apart is his belief that no piece of art is truly finished until it finds a new home. Many of his paintings have layers upon layers of previous works underneath, reflecting his commitment to continuous evolution and reinterpretation.

As for upcoming projects, Thomas regularly shares his work on Instagram (@tommytieyourshoes) and SoundCloud under the moniker "Counterfeit Bill." He's currently working on a series of Batman villains painted in his unique style and just released his ninth full-length album, "Pickpocket," on SoundCloud on October 13th. Check it out- it's brilliant!

In closing, Thomas offers advice to aspiring artists: "Never stop creating. You don't have to know anything about art to be a great artist. Art is all around us, and it makes life more meaningful. Experiment and have fun!"

Lastly, Thomas expresses his gratitude for The Art Store, which he says has played a crucial role in his journey as an artist. He praised our store for its welcoming and supportive atmosphere, describing us as a cornerstone of the Syracuse art community. "Thank you for everything that you guys have done for me," he says. "I am truly honored!" Thomas- so are we!!!!

Thomas VanBeveren's art and music are a testament to the power of creativity as a means of self-expression and connection with the world. His willingness to embrace a variety of mediums and his dedication to leaving behind a legacy of artistic endeavors make him a remarkable artist to watch as he continues to evolve and inspire.
